When the New York Jets acquired quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers they knew that his contract would need some amending. He was set to earn six figures in 2024 alone, with guarantees approaching $110 million.
That was never going to happen, as the Jets’ front office was going to have to do some cap wizardry. An extension was rumored to lower the number and spread the money out over a period of time or void years added to the end of the deal.
None of that ended up being needed, as Aaron Rodgers voluntarily gave back a large sum of money. He and the Jets agreed to a new two-year, $75 million deal that is fully guaranteed. As part of that deal, he took a $35 million pay cut over the next two seasons.
“The team gave up significant pieces for it to be just a one-year deal,” Rodgers said. “I’m aware of that. … Anything could happen with my body or the success we have this year, but I’m having a blast, so I really don’t see this as a one-year-and-done thing.”
This is wonderful news for the Jets. They now have a lot more money to spend to upgrade the roster around Aaron Rodgers and make a push for a Super Bowl. But, one analyst had some strong words for Aaron Rodgers, taking things from the view of a Packers fan.
Trey Wingo can’t help but feel bad for Packers fans. They watched their star quarterback get every last penny out of the team that he could. It cost the team, Davante Adams, during the 2022 offseason and eventually led to Aaron Rodgers seeking a trade to the Jets. Now, he is willing to accept a massive pay cut to help his new team.
As if things weren’t difficult enough seeing a legend of his status force his way out of town, this is a little more salt in the wound for the Packers and their fans. While it is good of Aaron Rodgers to help the Jets, this will definitely lead to some strong opinions coming from Green Bay.
