Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright is not a huge fan of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, so it’s no surprise that he does not think Purdy is deserving of an MVP award.
Purdy and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott are currently considered the two frontrunners to take home MVP honors this season, but Wright doesn’t even factor Purdy into the discussion.
Wright feels that offensive lineman Trent Williams, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel are all more valuable pieces than Purdy in the 49ers’ offense, and if a player is the fourth-most valuable player in his own offense, how could he possibly win the league MVP award?
Does Wright have a point? Maybe.
It’s worth nothing that San Francisco went 0-3 without both Williams and Samuel in the lineup, and during those three games, Purdy struggled mightily.
Since Williams and Samuel have returned, Purdy has returned to form, which indicates that he may very well be a product of the talent around him (and Kyle Shanahan’s coaching).
Of course, Wright is hardly the only media personality who feels that Purdy may merely be benefiting from Shanahan’s system, the same system that helped Jimmy Garoppolo reach a Super Bowl back during the 2019-20 campaign.
Regardless, Purdy deserves credit for managing with what he has been given.
In 12 games this season, the 23-year-old has thrown for 3,185 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing an NFL-best 70.2 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 116.1.
Brock Purdy, who played his collegiate football at Iowa State, was selected by the Niners with the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was pressed into starting duty during his rookie campaign after season-ending injuries to both Garoppolo and Trey Lance.
The 49ers are 9-3 and will take on the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.
