The Dallas Cowboys had a chance to quiet a lot of doubters in Week 5. Coming off of an impressive 38-3 victory over the New England Patriots in Week 4, Dallas was going to be put to the test against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football.

Things got off on the wrong foot right from the start for the Cowboys as the 49ers never looked back. They dismantled their visitors 42-10, cementing their status as one of the best teams in the NFL and being in a class of their own in the NFC.

For Dallas, any naysayers that existed before the game are louder now and the on the bandwagon saying they are fraudulent has a lot of people jumping on it. One of the people who have joined that crowd is a former NFL executive who spoke to NFL Analysis Network and did not mince their words.

“I’m not saying the Cowboys are a bad football team. What I am saying is that Dak Prescott and Mike McCarthy aren’t taking this team anywhere. They’re all bark, no bite.”

The Cowboys have won double-digit games in back-to-back seasons, which isn’t anything to scoff at. But, they are closer to the second or third tier of teams in the NFC, not the top tier where the 49ers reside with likely only the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys learned the hard way just how good San Francisco is. The score is evidence enough, but it was a truly thorough beatdown as they were outplayed in every facet of the game. Even the most diehard of Dallas fans have to come away from last night’s game feeling like this will be another year their team falls short of an NFC Championship Game, let alone the Super Bowl.

This was the first real step up in competition for the Cowboys in 2023 and they failed the test. Their three victories this season have come over the New York Giants, New York Jets and New England, who have a combined four wins, one of which was the Patriots defeating the Jets.

Those three teams, along with a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, are who the Cowboys played prior to their matchup with the 49ers. Based on that, it should be no surprise that Dallas was given a dose of reality in Week 5 and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back.
