NFL Insider Drops Bombshell Report On Cowboys’ Draft Plans

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have reached a stalemate with Dak Prescott in contract negotiations, which could impact how they approach the NFL Draft later this month.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that the Cowboys may even consider taking a quarterback early on in order to guard against potentially losing Prescott next offseason.

“What are they going to do at quarterback, if they lose Dak?” Schefter said on NFL Live. “That’s interesting. And, that’s why I think the Dallas Cowboys just might be a sleeper team in the quarterback market in the NFL Draft. Because, at some point in time, they might have to draft a quarterback, higher than you’d think, at some point in time, because Dak is going into the last year of the contract, and it might be time to get somebody in there to start grooming. Just like they found Dak Prescott in Round 4, it might be time to go find another quarterback, in another round, to begin getting him ready.”

Prescott is said to be seeking $60 million annually, which Dallas does not want to match at the current point in time. The Cowboys seem comfortable going into the season with Prescott playing out the final year of his deal, which means he would get to test free agency next March.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Dallas is done with Prescott. It could, of course, always re-sign him next offseason. But the Cowboys may need to start preparing in the event that they do lose him.

Could that result in Dallas taking a quarterback in the first round of the draft? Probably not. The Cowboys are trying to win a Super Bowl, after all, so you have to think they will address other roster needs first. But perhaps Dallas would consider taking a signal-caller in Rounds 3 or 4.

Prescott is coming off of the best season of his career, as he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes to go along with 4,516 yards and just nine interceptions. He finished second in MVP voting.

But, the Cowboys once again disappointed in the playoffs, falling to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round. That dropped Prescott’s postseason record to 2-5.
