NFL Insider Drops Major Bomb Report On Buccaneers’ QB Battle

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are learning firsthand, just as the New England Patriots did, how hard it is to adjust to life after Tom Brady. The future Hall of Famer opted for retirement this offseason, leaving a huge void under center in Tampa Bay.

That has led to a quarterback competition being held this offseason. 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask has been battling it out with free agent signing, Baker Mayfield. Both players will have opportunities to showcase themselves during the preseason as Mayfield will start Game 1 while Trask will start Game 2.

From an outsider’s perspective, that gives the impression of it being a truly equal competition. However, that does not seem to be the case. According to J.C. Cornell of the Draft Network, who is also a Buccaneers’ insider, Mayfield remains the frontrunner for the starting job despite his struggles in training camp.

Videos of Mayfield at practice have gone viral, showing off-target passes and turnovers. Interceptions have been a major thorn in his side as the former No. 1 overall pick of the Cleveland Browns has thrown seven in nine practices.

Trask, on the other hand, has been making steady progress this offseason, surprising some people with his solid performance. However, he is facing a steep uphill climb to unseat Mayfield as QB1 in Tampa Bay.

“I’ve chatted with numerous well plugged in people with the Bucs. Seems that the consensus is that it’s Baker Mayfield’s job to lose,” Cornell tweeted. “If Baker has a solid game on Friday night it will be an extremely uphill battle for Trask to win this job.

“That being said, there’s a decent chance we see both QBs this season,” Cornell added.

This will be something to keep an eye on not only throughout training camp but into the regular season. Mayfield struggled last season when given the keys to the Carolina Panthers offense, getting benched and eventually released.

He did play better with the short-handed Los Angeles Rams, but that has not carried over into camp thus far. If he turns the ball over at this rate during the preseason games or regular season, Trask will assuredly have his number called.

The quarterback position is the biggest question mark for the Buccaneers currently. The performance of whoever is under center will make or break this team.
