Many are expecting the New York Giants to take a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft later this month, but we shouldn’t be too sure.
During a recent appearance on the Talkin’ Ball podcast, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that the Giants may end up going in a different direction at No. 6 and then take a quarterback later on.
“To me in the end, this is a team that has enough other needs and a team that is trying to win now, that I wouldn’t guess that they go quarterback at six right now,” Schefter said. “I do think there will be a quarterback selected with a pick that’s a relatively high pick whether that’s at two or three or if they move back up if a guy like Bo Nix or Michael Penix is available perhaps, but to me to go quarterback at six when there’s going to be some incredible players on the board when they have some of the needs that they do, I think I would be a little surprised.”
This falls in line with general manager Joe Schoen’s recent comments that New York is not necessarily locked in at drafting a signal-caller with its top pick.
Schefter is right in that the Giants have tons of needs, particularly on the offensive end.
New York is in desperate need of weapons, as it has not had a No. 1 wide receiver since Odell Beckham Jr. It also badly needs help along its offensive line, and it may want to look at a backfield partner for running back Devin Singletary, who the Giants just signed to replace Saquon Barkley.
Of course, Big Blue has an issue under center, too.
New York signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension after an impressive 2022 campaign, but Jones was an unmitigated disaster in the first year of the deal this past season and ended up tearing his ACL. The final two years of Jones’ contract are not guaranteed, so the Giants do have an out after 2025.
That’s why many are projecting that New York will end up taking a quarterback at No. 6, even if it means the signal-caller sits behind Jones during his rookie campaign.
But apparently, no one really knows what the Giants are going to do.
New York went just 6-11 in 2023.
