With Mike Evans re-signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cincinnati Bengals franchise tagging Tee Higgins, Jacksonville Jaguars star Calvin Ridley is the clear-cut best wide receiver on the market.

However, news on the Ridley front has been awfully quiet over the first 24 hours of the legal tampering period in free agency.

As more and more big names fly off the board, Ridley remains available, and there haven’t even been any serious rumors of potential destinations.

Of course, there has been speculation of possible landing spots, like the New England Patriots, for example.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports provided an update on Ridley on Tuesday morning, saying that the Patriots hope to sign him, but that the Jaguars also hope to retain him.

It should be noted that Jacksonville inked fellow wide out Gabe Davis to a three-year, $39 million deal on Monday, and the Jags did not enter the offseason with too much cap space.

The Jaguars currently have Christian Kirk and Davis as their top two receivers, and while they are both solid guys, neither are legitimate No. 1 wide outs.

However, if Ridley is asking for too much money, Jacksonville may end up moving on to cheaper alternatives.

The Patriots, on the other hand, do not have that problem. New England has expansive cap space and has plenty of room to add Ridley regardless of how much he is commanding.

Of course, the Pats will surely be economical with Ridley and won’t want to overpay, which could be why he remains unsigned. Perhaps Ridley is asking for an arm and a leg and teams are not willing to meet his demands.

It should certainly be interesting to see what happens with Ridley in the coming days. He will probably sign somewhere soon, but at this point, it’s hard to envision him staying with the Jaguars.
