The 2023 season has been a disaster for the New England Patriots. One-third of the way through and they are 1-5, showing very little to provide any hope that things will turn around in the coming weeks.
The offense has been a mess, as quarterback Mac Jones continues to regress in his performance. New England has put forth some of the worst performances in franchise history this season, putting a stain on what could be the end of the Bill Belichick era.
Based on their record and performance thus far, conventional wisdom would suggest that the Patriots are going to be sellers ahead of the 2023 NFL Trade Deadline. This is a deal that needs a reset in many ways and stockpiling as many future assets as possible would be the best way to accomplish that.
There are a few players on the team that should garner some interest around the league. One of those players is wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Bourne was someone who garnered interest from around the league last year, but no move was made.
At the time, it was easy to see why New England would make the decision to hang onto one of their more productive receivers. But, on an expiring contract, it would make more sense for the Patriots to move him this time around, on top of their poor record.
But, it doesn’t sound like a trade involving Bourne will occur again. Per Fowler, there has been no movement on that front, which is a shocking development, to say the least.
As the head coach and general manager, Belichick has no incentive to sell before the deadline knowing that his job is on the line. He is going to do everything in his power to turn this season around, as it is reportedly playoffs or bust for him to retain the head coaching position.
