The New England Patriots may end up trading quarterback Mac Jones this offseason, and people around the NFL would view such a move as mutually beneficial, according to Chad Graff and Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

The fact that Jones has apparently worn out his welcome in Foxborough does not come as much of a surprise.

Jones, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Patriots with the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He enjoyed a solid rookie campaign, starting every game and throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while completing 67.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 92.5. He even made a Pro Bowl appearance for his efforts.

Since then, however, Jones has been on a rather rapid decline.

In his second season, he made 14 starts and totaled 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 picks while completing 65.2 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 84.8.

Then, this past year, Jones trudged through the worst season of his career to date, finishing with 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes and recording a passer rating of 77. Those numbers came over 11 starts, as he was benched in favor of Bailey Zappe midway through the year.

It seems hard to imagine Jones having any sort of future in New England at this point, so the best course of action for both sides would be a trade.

Of course, Jones’ trade value is surely very minimal, but perhaps the Pats can extract a late-round pick out of some other team in exchange for him.

The Patriots went just 4-13 this past season.
