The Dallas Cowboys are in need of another weapon in their aerial attack, and Fox Sports analyst and former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson sees a perfect target for the club: New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.
Thomas is actually Johnson’s nephew, but I think we can rule out nepotism here.
While I don’t think anyone would argue that Thomas would be a fine addition for the Cowboys, the question is, would the Saints move him right now?
New Orleans is just 3-4, but it sits only one game behind the Atlanta Falcons for first place in the very winnable NFC South division. Yes, the Saints have been disappointing, but in spite of their struggles, they remain right in the thick of the playoff picture.
Trading Thomas away would essentially be a sign of New Orleans throwing in the towel, and it’s hard to imagine the Saints doing that at this point. The Falcons aren’t exactly world beaters, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 3-3 and the Carolina Panthers haven’t won a game.
By all accounts, New Orleans still looks like the most talented team in its division, so if anything, the Saints would probably prefer to add pieces rather than sell.
Johnson points out that Thomas is on an expiring contract, which is a fair observation, but that typically only matters when a team feels like it is out of the playoff race, which New Orleans isn’t. Plus, with Thomas being a life-long Saint, who is to say that he wouldn’t want to just re-up with the squad during the offseason?
Thomas definitely isn’t the same receiver he was several years ago, as injuries have clearly sapped him. That being said, he would absolutely make the Cowboys (or any team) better.
It just doesn’t seem like the Saints trading him is a very realistic scenario.
Through seven games this season, Michael Thomas has logged 34 catches for 371 yards and a touchdown.
