Speculation swirled this winter following the news of Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers’ decision to return for another season, sparking discussions about the future of Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.

Despite being a highly touted five-star recruit in the 2023 class, there had been no indication that Manning was considering transferring away from Austin.

With Ewers set to lead the team in 2024, Manning, a redshirt freshman this fall, will begin the season as the backup quarterback. Unlike some of his fellow five-star recruits from the 2023 class, Manning won’t immediately step into the starting role.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed that there won’t be an open quarterback battle this spring; the job belongs to Ewers.

However, Manning’s uncle, Eli Manning, addressed any concerns about Arch sitting another year at Texas during an appearance on the Zach Gelb Show in Las Vegas. He emphasized that this situation isn’t an issue for Arch’s development. Instead, it offers him valuable time to grow and refine his skills.

“He picked Texas because that’s where he wants to be, that’s where he wants to play football,” said Eli. “He likes Coach Sarkisian and his offense and what they’re doing. He knew last year that he was gonna go, he was gonna redshirt, get some playing time. “Obviously, I think the plan was Ewers would maybe go to the NFL. But he’s there (for another year). It’s another year for for Arch to mature, learn the offense, get bigger and stronger in the weight room, and always be prepared to play. You never know what’s gonna happen. And so he’s got to be ready. If not, then he gets some playing time here and there and he’s got three more years of eligibility at a great school, at a great football program on the rise.”

As a college football fan, it’s reassuring to see Arch taking this patient approach. There’s no rush for him to take the reins, as he’ll have his opportunity in 2025 at the latest.

Moreover, the prospect of sitting out for two years won’t negatively impact his NFL draft prospects. On the contrary, as Eli Manning suggested, it could actually benefit Arch’s long-term development.

It will be interesting to see what kind of career Arch Manning can have with the Texas Longhorns when he does assume the starting quarterback role following the 2024 season.
