Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a scary, non-contact injury in training camp on July 27 and needed to be carted off the field. The NFL star appeared to hurt his right calf.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told reporters that Burrow suffered a calf strain. Burrow will likely rest and undergo treatment so that he’s ready for Week 1 of the 2023 season. The Bengals will take on the Cleveland Browns to open the 2023 campaign.

One of the best players in the NFL, Burrow threw for 4,475 yards last season. He tossed 35 touchdowns and completed 68.3% of his passes. The Bengals went 12-4 under Burrow and beat the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills in the playoffs before losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Joe Burrow & Cincinnati Bengals Updates

Burrow is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Bengals. July 26’s agreement between the Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert on a five-year, $262.5 million extension officially set the target for Burrow’s representation in their dealings with the Bengals. When the time comes to put pen to paper, it’s fair to expect Burrow’s extension will exceed Herbert’s in value.

“It gets done when it gets done,” Burrow said when asked for an estimation of when he might sign a long-term extension. “We’ll see.”

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Joe Burrow & Cincinnati Bengals Updates

In 42 games with the Bengals, Burrow has thrown for 11,774 yards and 82 touchdowns. Cincinnati is 24-17-1 with Burrow under center.

The Bengals will likely be careful with Burrow moving forward. Don’t be surprised if the LSU product doesn’t play at all in the preseason. After all, there is no point in risking Burrow’s health, especially in meaningless games.
