The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ ground attack has seen better days, as the Buccaneers are averaging just 87 rushing yards per game through the first four weeks of the season, good for 27th in the NFL.
Tampa Bay’s featured back is second-year player Rachaad White, who is registering a meager 3.3 yards per carry. This comes after an inefficient rookie campaign in which he logged 3.7 yards per attempt.
The Bucs need some help in their running game, and that is an issue they could very well address between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline. However, if the Buccaneers don’t fix the problem in the coming weeks, they will have to punt until free agency in the spring.
NFL NEWS & RUMORS: AJ Dillon, Green Bay Packers & Tampa Bay Buccaneers Updates
Bleacher Report already has a potential target in mind for Tampa Bay, naming Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon as a possible solution.
But here’s the problem: Dillon hasn’t been any better than White this season. He has been worse. Through the first four games, Dillon has carried the ball 44 times for 118 yards, good for a horrific average of 2.7 yards per tote.
At 247 pounds, Dillon is a change of pace back, so it’s not like the Bucs would be bringing him in to get the bulk of the touches. Still, that is not an impressive number, and Dillon’s efficiency has gradually worsened since entering the league.
NFL NEWS & RUMORS: AJ Dillon, Green Bay Packers & Tampa Bay Buccaneers Updates
Upon joining the Packers as a second-round pick in 2020, Dillon logged 5.3 yards per carry. However, that number dropped to 4.3 in 2021 and then 4.1 last season. Throughout his career overall, the 25-year-old is recorded 4.2 yards per attempt.
If the Buccaneers are going to make a run at Dillon, they should certainly bring in another quicker, more agile halfback to complement him. Their struggles in the ground game will likely persist if they don’t.
