The Atlanta Falcons surprised a lot of people when they used the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Texas running back, Bijan Robinson. There is no denying the talent that Robinson possesses, but with the current state of the running back position, it was a move that shocked a lot of people.

The New York Giants received a lot of criticism when they used the No. 2 overall pick on Saquon Barkley in the 2018 NFL Draft and the Falcons have received their fair share as well. Teams just aren’t prioritizing the running back position any longer and using a top-10 pick on one seems outlandish.

However, no one is going to care about where Robinson was selected if he can live up to the hype. There are plenty of draft evaluators who believe that the former Longhorn is the best player in this year’s draft class.

While he plays at a position deemed less valuable, the impact that Robinson can have on the field goes beyond just carrying the ball. He is an excellent pass blocker and dynamic as a receiver, capable of creating big plays whether it is catching passes out of the backfield or splitting out wide.

The Falcons definitely added a very talented football player to their roster. One NFL scout that spoke to NFL Analysis Network believes that Robinson is in for a big rookie season should Atlanta fully unleash him.

“I think Bijan Robinson has the talent to be a top-seven running back as a rookie. In fact, I think he could be even higher depending how Atlanta uses him. If he’s their workhorse, I expect nothing short of 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns.”

There is a chance that Robinson isn’t a workhorse, at least in the early going. He possesses the skill set to handle such a role, but the Falcons’ depth at running back is deep. Tyler Allgeier had over 1,000 yards as a rookie, while Caleb Huntley and Cordarrelle Patterson remain on the roster as well.

Robinson is the likeliest candidate to lead this backfield in production, but a workhorse role may not come right away. There is too much talent currently on the offense for Arthur Smith and the Falcons’ coaching staff to take advantage of unless some changes are made to the roster.
