NFL World Reacts To Steelers’ Major Second-Round Selection

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a trade up in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft to select offensive tackle Broderick Jones out of Georgia. There was a lot of speculation that the Steelers would do the same in Round 2, as they had the first pick of the round.

Ultimately, Pittsburgh decided to hold onto the pick and not trade back. With the No. 32 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Steelers selected Penn State cornerback, Joey Porter Jr. He is a prospect that the Steelers have a ton of information on as his father, Joey Porter, was a standout linebacker for the Steelers for eight seasons.

After addressing their need along the offensive line on Day 1, the secondary was the biggest need remaining for the Steelers. Pittsburgh lost their best cornerback from last season, Cameron Sutton, in free agency to the Detroit Lions.

Porter will help fill the void there, joining veteran free agent signing Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace. It was a selection that NFL Twitter reacted to positively. Even fans who root for other teams, such as this Green Bay Packers fan called the selection a “W pickkkk”.

Another fan, who roots for the New York Giants, was disappointed to see Porter land in Pittsburgh. They tweeted a simple “NNOOOO” in response to the Nittany Lion heading to the Steel City.

One fan called the Pittsburgh pick a steal, and many people would seemingly feel the same way. Many mock drafts had Porter going in the first round, so the value was excellent for the Steelers landing him with the first pick of the second round.

The Black and Gold killed two birds with one stone by adding Porter to their roster. Cornerback was an immediate and long-term need and the Penn State product gives them someone that can step into the lineup immediately while providing a building block for the future.
