Could the Pittsburgh Steelers try to solve their situation at quarterback by swinging a deal with the Chicago Bears for Justin Fields?
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon thinks it would be a great idea for the Steelers.
The Steelers are entering the offseason with a big question under center: do they roll with Kenny Pickett heading into 2024? Do they trade up in the NFL Draft? Do they sign a free agent? Or, do they make a trade for an already established signal-caller?
There are a lot of avenues Pittsburgh can take in the coming months, but making a play for Fields could be one of the club’s best options.
Fields made 13 starts this past season, missing four games due to a dislocated thumb. During his time on the field, he threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. In addition, he rushed for 657 yards and four scores.
The Bears own the No. 1 overall pick in the draft this April (via the Carolina Panthers), and many feel they will end up taking USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the selection.
If Chicago plans on going with Williams, it wouldn’t make much sense to keep Fields on the roster, so the Bears could very well trade him early in the offseason.
Should Chicago place Fields on the trade block, the Steelers would likely be one of the first teams to inquire about his services (that is, of course, assuming Pittsburgh would be interested).
Fields’ career has been marked by inconsistency, but he has flashed considerable potential, like between Weeks 4 and 5 this past season when he totaled eight touchdown passes and just one pick.
The Steelers are clearly not far away from contending. All they really need is a genuine answer under center. Whether or not Justin Fields is the solution remains to be seen.
Pittsburgh went 10-7 and lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs this past season.
