Ohio State safety Lathan Ransom has announced his return for his final year of eligibility with a resolute message shared on Instagram: “The football program and this University mean too much to me, and we have Unfinished Business.”

Ransom, who completed his fourth year in the program, had a challenging 2022 season due to a foot injury sustained against Wisconsin on Oct. 28, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. Despite the setback, he made a significant impact, accumulating 34 tackles, one interception, and forcing a crucial fumble.

As a part of Ohio State’s defense, which allowed just 11.2 points per game, Ransom’s presence was instrumental. While many of his teammates pondered their NFL draft prospects, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams confirmed his return, signaling a formidable defensive unit for the upcoming season. Ransom will join a talented safety lineup, including junior-to-be Sonny Styles and Malik Hartford, who showcased promise with 158 snaps during his freshman year.

Additionally, Ja’Had Carter, a Syracuse transfer, is expected to make a significant contribution, provided he recovers from his injury.

Ransom’s journey in 2022 was one of redemption. Following a broken leg suffered in the Rose Bowl, he faced challenges during his junior season, notably being targeted for big plays in games against Michigan and Georgia. However, this adversity fueled his determination for the 2023 season.

Reflecting on his decision to return, Ransom expressed, “I think about that every time I step on the field.” Although the NFL draft had tempted him after the 2022 season, his unmet personal and team goals in that year compelled him to come back to Ohio State. Ransom’s motivations are clear: “I came back to improve my game, to be a leader, and to achieve all the goals that you come to achieve when you’re at Ohio State – beat the team up north and win the national championship. I haven’t achieved that.”

With the same objectives in mind, Ransom is back and eager to make those dreams a reality. His contributions have earned him recognition as an honorable mention All-Big Ten player in both coaches’ and media’s votes.
