Green Bay Packers: 3 Burning Questions Heading Into the Preseason

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Who Is Going to Step Up at Wide Receiver

The front-runners at the position, Randall Cobb and Davante Adams, are set in stone. But, after that is a mess of options with no clear candidate to fill in the third spot on the depth chart. Let’s be frank, whoever is listed as the third receiver is really the sixth or seventh option in the pecking order of targets due to the amount of other options in this offense. Nonetheless, who will step up at the position will be determined through the course of the preseason.

Third-year pro Geronimo Allison is the incumbent. He appears to be in-line to receive every opportunity to show fans and the coaching staff why he deserves that number three spot. Allison ended his 2017 season on a sour note. In a game that effectively eliminated the Packers from playoff contention, Allison dropped a key pass on a key drive in a one-score game. However, the flashes have been there since he went undrafted in 2016. Even Rodgers himself has spoken highly of Allison.

Behind him are the three rookies from this years class, all of whom are incredibly talented. Each one of them is looking to earn a roster spot and playing time. After that, there are the likes of guys like Jake Kumerow and Trevor Davis who are also fighting for a roster spot and playing time. These two have more of an uphill battle than some of the other listed above due to the talent at the position.

The forgotten dark horse candidate to steal a roster spot could be second-year pro Deangelo Yancey. Yancey spent the 2017 season on the practice squad, but early reports out of camp are that the former fifth-round pick is turning heads. He is a guy to keep an eye on as the preseason progresses and this receiving corps begins to take shape.
