This offseason has been full of big moves for the Carolina Panthers. Frank Reich was hired to take over as the team’s head coach and ownership signed off on a deal that can finally address their quarterback need.
Carolina traded four draft picks and wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Chicago Bears for the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. That blockbuster garnered all of the attention, and rightfully so. It could set the Panthers franchise up for years to come by having their pick of the quarterback litter in this year’s draft class.
While that move was certainly the biggest, it was far from the only one that was made. The Panthers were relatively active in free agency, making splashes on both sides of the ball. Offensively, running back Miles Sanders, tight end Hayden Hurst and wide receivers DJ Chark and Adam Thielen were all signed.
Defensively the team jumped into the free agent pool early to land Shy Tuttle to shore up their defensive line. Their secondary was also addressed with the signing of Vonn Bell, which is considered one of the best under-the-radar moves of the offseason.
Bell is joining the Panthers after spending three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He is a durable player, as he was on the field for at least 1,004 snaps in each of the last three seasons. Bell is a solid, reliable safety and one that will fit in the new scheme that the Panthers will be running.
After being a 4-3 defense under Matt Rhule, Carolina will now change to a 3-4 front under Reich. Bell’s presence as a capable deep safety will enable the team to move around Jeremy Chinn, who hasn’t had quite the same impact the last two seasons after finishing second in the Defensive Rookie of the Year award voting in 2020.
Chinn’s versatility can now be used to the fullest extent with Bell in the fold. Bell is a great all-around player, as he can play deep or up close to the line of scrimmage depending on what is needed.
