The Carolina Panthers started the 2021 season with a bang. They started the season off 3-0 and looked like they could be a surprise playoff team. Unfortunately for them, things began unraveling quickly after that.

Carolina ended the season 5-12 as injuries derailed their hot start. They took a chance on Sam Darnold at the quarterback position and that turned into a disaster. Darnold was getting the job done through the air and on the ground at the start of the season but regressed as the season wore on, looking like the same player he was with the New York Jets.

Darnold ended up throwing only nine touchdowns on the season compared to 13 interceptions. He was pretty effective on the ground, rushing 48 times for 222 yards and five touchdowns. But, if the Panthers are to start moving up in the standings, they need more consistent production from their quarterback.

If the Panthers learned anything in 2021 it is that Darnold is not their quarterback of the future. They will do anything they can to ensure they have someone else under center once the 2022 season rolls around.

Carolina searched high and low for a quarterback and will likely do so again this offseason. They pursued Deshaun Watson aggressively, but his off-field issues make him a major question mark. But, other veterans could be available this offseason, such as Aaron Rodgers.

The Panthers were suggested as a landing spot for Rodgers and the fit makes some sense. Carolina has some great weapons offensively with running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receivers D.J. Moore and Terrace Marshall Jr.

But, it would be costly. The suggested trade to land Rodgers in Carolina was the No. 6 pick in 2022, a first and second-round pick in 2023, a first-round pick in 2024 and Robbie Anderson. The Panthers are without second and third-round picks this year because of the trades for Darnold and C.J. Henderson.

That is a steep price to pay for Rodgers, but the Panthers are desperate for an upgrade at quarterback. Should Tom Brady retire, the NFC South would be wide open with the Atlanta Falcons rebuilding and the New Orleans Saints staring down a similar fate, especially with Sean Payton moving on as head coach.

Sensing that there is a chance to seize an opportunity to quickly jump up the standings, the Panthers could take the plunge and pay a premium price for one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL in Rodgers.
