When Jerod Mayo’s introductory press conference as the head coach of the New England Patriots unfolded, there was a notable presence in the audience—quarterback Mac Jones.

This seemingly unanticipated presence elicited a chuckle from someone within the organization, as reported by Sean T. McGuire of NESN.

“He was in his workout gear which is ironic since he cleared his entire locker at the end of the season. Not a single hanger. Completely empty. … I mean, come on man. Everyone’s watched him play, they’ve watched him act like a prima donna. The team is sick of it, everyone’s sick of it.”

Mac Jones, after an initially promising rookie season with the Patriots in 2021 that led the team to the playoffs, has faced significant struggles since then.

Presently, there are few, if any, who view him as a viable long-term solution for the team. The Patriots, holding the No. 3 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, have a prime opportunity to select one of the top quarterbacks available. Given the transition to a first-year head coach in Jerod Mayo, such a move could align with the organization’s future plans.

The Patriots’ offseason decisions are poised to be intriguing, and there is speculation about Mac Jones’ future with the team as the 2024 season approaches. While some reports suggest that the organization is prepared to part ways with him, the final verdict remains uncertain.

This marks a significant juncture for the Patriots, as they embark on a journey to rebuild from the ground up—a departure from their approach since before Bill Belichick assumed leadership.

Consequently, they will undoubtedly be a captivating team to monitor in the coming years.
