The Philadelphia Eagles are facing a challenge in their defense, particularly in the safety position, as they lost both C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps to free agency in 2023. This has left the team vulnerable, leading to a disappointing 31st ranking in passing yards allowed for the season.
However, there is hope on the horizon with the potential addition in the upcoming NFL offseason.
Oregon’s Evan Williams could be an intriguing candidate for the team in the 2024 NFL Draft and the Eagles should pursue him.
Standing at 6’0″ and weighing 199 pounds, Williams has a promising background in college football. He spent four years at Fresno State before making a notable move to Oregon for his final season.
Throughout his college career, Williams showcased his impressive tackling abilities, amassing an impressive 308 tackles, with 214 of them being solo stops.
During Senior Bowl week, Williams displayed not only his strong tackling skills but also his coverage prowess and ball-handling abilities. In a memorable moment during the game itself, he made a stunning diving interception in front of Missouri’s running back, Cody Schrader, right in the end zone.
His standout performance during Senior Bowl practices also earned him recognition as the National Team’s Defensive Specialist Player of the Week.
Although Williams did not garner a reputation as a ball hawk during his college years, with just four interceptions and 14 passes defended over five seasons, his time in Mobile demonstrated that he possesses the potential to become a game-changing force on the defensive backfield for the Eagles. This could be the help the team needs to shore up their defense and improve their performance in the passing game.
If the Eagles want to get back into Super Bowl contention, they will need to improve the backend of their defense. Williams could be a big step towards making that happen with new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
