The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2023 campaign with serious questions about their ground game after losing running back Miles Sanders to the Carolina Panthers in free agency.
The Eagles elected to roll with Kenneth Gainwell as the featured back in Week 1, and Gainwell responded by carrying the ball 14 times for 54 yards before succumbing to a rib injury.
With Gainwell sidelined for Week 2, offseason acquisition D’Andre Swift stepped in and racked up 175 yards and a touchdown off of 28 attempts. While Swift’s performance was certainly impressive, Philadelphia is surely not going to anoint him as the club’s No. 1 back just yet.
Fortunately for the Eagles, there is plenty of time between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline for them to make a move.
Vincent Frank of SportsNaut mentions Tennessee Titans halfback Derrick Henry as someone who could potentially be on the move over the next month and change, and he names Philadelphia as one of Henry’s potential suitors.
It certainly makes sense.
While the Eagles are looking to make it back to their second consecutive Super Bowl, the Titans are a team that would be better served rebuilding. Tennessee has gotten off to an 0-2 start this season and has lost eight straight games dating back to last year. The 29-year-old Henry surely does not figure into the squad’s long-term plans, and he probably would not want to be around for a teardown anyway.
Henry would instantly become the featured back in Philly and would provide a significant boost for what is an already explosive offense.
The three-time Pro Bowler is in the final season of a four-year, $50 million contract and is earning $10.5 million in 2023. Derrick Henry led the NFL in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2019 and 2020. He also racked up 1,538 yards and 13 scores last season.
