The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing cornerback Patrick Peterson, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Peterson was slated to receive a $3 million roster bonus next week, so cutting him will save the Steelers $6.85 million in cap space.

The move ends Peterson’s tenure in Pittsburgh after just one year.

Peterson signed a two-year deal with the Steelers last March and played in every game during his lone season with the club, registering 42 tackles, a couple of interceptions and 11 passes defended.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the fifth overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

He spent the first decade of his career with the Cardinals and quickly established himself as one of the best defensive backs in football, making eight straight Pro Bowl appearances to begin his career. He also earned three First-Team All-Pro selections during that span.

What also made Peterson so valuable early on was his durability, as he never missed a game over his first eight NFL seasons.

Following his long run in Arizona, Peterson joined the Minnesota Vikings for a couple of seasons. He was productive for the Vikings, but was still a ways off from the dominant force he was with the Cardinals.

Peterson then linked up with the Steelers.

In 13 NFL seasons, Peterson has missed a grand total of nine games, with six of those contests coming during the 2019 campaign.

Pittsburgh went 10-7 this past season and made the playoffs as a Wild Card. It then proceeded to lose to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round.

We’ll see where Peterson ends up in the coming weeks. Surely, a contending team will give him a chance.
