Despite only being a third-round pick in 2019, David Montgomery entered the NFL with a solid amount of hype (fantasy-related or otherwise). The Chicago Bears had a big role for him to fill after trading Jordan Howard to the Eagles, and there was minimal (if any) real competition.
Montgomery wound up with 242 carries (tied for 14th-most in the league). However, he had less than 15 carries nine times. His four games with 18 or more carries came within the first four and the last four weeks of the season.
With Tarik Cohen having little to offer as a runner, he was fed 104 targets (second on the team) last year. So Montgomery was left with scraps in the passing game (25 catches on 35 targets).
Montgomery seems to be in line for a bigger workload this year.
“If the Bears opt to run more in 2020” should hardly be an “if.” Whether it’s Mitch Trubisky or Nick Foles under center, or surely both at some point in the season, relying on the passing game is bad strategy. Last year, Chicago threw the ball 61.3 percent of the time (11th-most in the NFL.
With a bigger role coming, if only logically, what does the 2020 season have in store for David Montgomery?
