Training camp for the Las Vegas Raiders has not gotten off to a great start. After being unable to come to a long-term agreement with star running back Josh Jacobs last week, he has opted to not report to camp.
Since he has not yet signed his franchise tender, he is not obligated to report. At this point, it is anyone’s guess when Jacobs will show up as there have been rumors that he could miss regular season games.
That would be a worst-case scenario for the Raiders as Jacobs is a huge part of their offensive game plan. Until he reports, you can be sure that he will be a major topic of discussion at camp as well.
For the players there, they have already fielded a number of questions about Jacobs. One of the players who was asked was star pass rusher Maxx Crosby. He provided a brutally honest answer about Jacobs when asked about the support that he is giving his absent teammate.
“Josh is a grown man. He’s got to do what’s best for him…I want everyone to get paid,” Crosby said during a press conference this week.
Crosby was reportedly the player who was waiting in the car with Jacobs ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline on July 17th hoping that a deal would be struck in the waning moments. No contract was reached, which has led to the current situation.
While there are two sides to a negotiation, the Raiders don’t have anyone to blame but themselves for how things currently stand. When Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels took over as general manager and head coach, one of the first things that they did was decline the fifth-year option on Jacobs’ contract.
The 2019 first-round pick out of Alabama used that as motivation, as he had the best season of his career in 2022. He led the league in rushing yards, offensive touches and total yards from scrimmage. That put Jacobs in line for a huge contract that just never came from the Raiders, as they opted instead to place the franchise tag on him.
