University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been climbing up NFL Draft boards recently, and now, he reportedly has two teams interested in trading up for him, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler notes that the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos are the two clubs that seem most interested.
The Vikings own two first-round draft picks at Nos. 11 and 23. The Broncos, meanwhile, have only the 12th overall selection.
You would think that would give Minnesota the inside track to moving up to acquire McCarthy, but that would only be if it is willing to part with both of its first-rounders this year.
The two most logical teams the Vikings and Broncos can trade with are the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers, who pick fourth and fifth. The Chargers are probably the more likely scenario, as the Cardinals are expected by most to select Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 4.
McCarthy is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he led Michigan to a national championship, throwing for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 72.3 percent of his passes.
The 21-year-old is generally regarded as the fourth-best quarterback prospect in this draft class behind Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, but there are some who are not enamored with him.
While McCarthy has been praised by some for his intangibles, others question his physical attributes, stating that he seems like he will be limited as a passer on the professional level.
We’ll see what becomes of McCarthy over the next week-and-a-half or so, but one thing is for sure: he certainly seems to have some squads interested in him.
There has even been chatter that the New England Patriots could take J.J. McCarthy at No. 3.
