The Los Angeles Rams are signing quarterback Carson Wentz, according to multiple reports (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk).
The move comes after Brett Rypien got the start in place of Matthew Stafford in the Rams’ loss to the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday. Rypien went just 13-for-28 with 130 yards and an interception.
Stafford was sidelined with a thumb injury. He is expected to return after Los Angeles’ Week 10 bye, but the Rams would obviously prefer to have Wentz for some insurance.
Wentz last played in the NFL with the Washington Commanders last season. He was limited to eight games due to both injuries and a benching. During his time on the field, he threw for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 62.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 80.2. The Commanders released him during the offseason.
The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at North Dakota State, was originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He spent the first five years of his career with the Eagles and looked to be on his way to stardom during his second season before ultimately tearing his ACL 13 games into the campaign. Prior to the injury, Wentz had totaled 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven picks and was a contender for the MVP award. Of course, after Wentz went down, Nick Foles came in and led Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl title.
Wentz was never the same since the ACL injury, and after a few rocky years, the Eagles traded him to the Indianapolis Colts in March 2021. Wentz proceeded to spend just one disappointing season with the Colts before being dealt to Washington in March 2022.
In 92 starts over the course of his NFL career, Carson Wentz has thrown 151 touchdowns and 66 picks while completing 62.6 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 89.3.
The Rams will take on the Seattle Seahawks when they get back on the field in Week 11.
