The San Francisco 49ers had one of the most feared defenses in the entire NFL last season. Led by their star-studded defensive line, they terrorized opposing offenses all season long. Now, it appears that they could be trying to add to their secondary with New York Jets’ star safety Jamal Adams.
According to a report from Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated’s All49ers, the 49ers are “picking up steam” on a potential trade to acquire Adams from the Jets.
Needless to say, this would be a move that came out of nowhere. Many expected Adams to end up with the Dallas Cowboys, which appears to be the favorite landing spot for Adams himself. If the 49ers swooped in to steal him, it would be a huge step in the right direction for them.
Adams is one of the top defensive playmakers in the entire NFL. He can play the pass, run, and force turnovers at an elite level. That is exactly what the 49ers need to take the next step towards a championship.
Last season with the Jets, Adams ended up recording 75 total tackles to go along with 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, one defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes. He was able to produce those numbers all while missing two games.
San Francisco came up just short in the Super Bowl last season against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Adding a secondary talent like Adams would improve the 49ers’ biggest weakness.
Expect to hear a lot more about Jamal Adams in the near future. The 49ers may or may not end up acquiring him, but this is something to keep a close eye on. San Francisco may be looking to make one more massive move to cap off a good offseason.
