RUMOR: Redskins could have interest in Cam Newton trade

The Carolina Panthers have recently thrown support behind Cam Newton as their long-term starting quarterback. Despite that, there is belief that if the Panthers received a good offer for Newton, they would trade him. One team to keep an eye on could be the Washington Redskins.

According to a report from ESPN’s Matthew Berry, who did some digging at the NFL Draft Combine, Ron Rivera absolutely loves Newton. Washington could have some level of interest in trading for Newton if he is available.

It was also noted, more than once, by folks in both Carolina and Washington, that if Newton was somehow available, Ron Rivera absolutely loves Cam. Loves him.

Washington has been taking a long look at Alabama standout quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. They could potentially take the young signal-caller with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft should they choose to go that route.

Dwayne Haskins is currently projected to be the starting quarterback to start the 2020 season. However, it doesn’t seem like Rivera and company have a ton of faith in him. They are comfortable with him if they can’t acquire a better option, but all of this interest in quarterbacks has made things interesting.

Newton to the Redskins would be an intriguing move. Washington is still a few pieces away from contending, but a healthy Newton could change a lot for them.

While it is interesting to think about, the Redskins should not be willing to pay too much to get him. Newton has elite talent, but his injuries are concerning. Rivera knows his former quarterback well, but the Panthers may ask for too much in return.

All of that being said, this is definitely something to keep an eye on moving forward. Newton may still be in play on the trade market despite the recent support from the Panthers for him.
