The San Francisco 49ers acquired Chase Young in a blockbuster trade deadline deal with the Washington Commanders last week, and Young is already looking forward to playing with old college teammate Nick Bosa.
Speaking at his introductory 49ers press conference on Monday, Young expressed how happy he was to rejoin Bosa.
“Wasn’t mad,” Young said when asked if Bosa’s presence made the trade news easier, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “Nick is here. Always been a big brother to me. Just stepping in here today — the culture, the vibe is a lot different. I definitely know I’m in the building with winners.”
Young and Bosa played two seasons together at Ohio State and wreaked havoc in opposing backfields, and Young is looking to replicate that success in San Francisco, saying that it’s “gonna be fun” lining up with Bosa again and the “race to the quarterback” will be similar to when they played for the Buckeyes.
The Niners sent a third-round draft pick to the Commanders in exchange for Young, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Young was originally selected by Washington with the second overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft but was a rather significant disappointment in the nation’s capital.
While he enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign, posting 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks, he tore his ACL nine games into his sophomore season and was then limited to just three contests in 2022 due to his recovery and other issues. Between those two years, Young compiled just 1.5 sacks.
The good news is that Young has seen a bit of a resurgence this season, totaling 15 tackles and five sacks in seven games.
He should definitely be of assistance to a 49ers pass rush that has actually had some difficulty getting to the quarterback this season.
Chase Young will get to make his Niners debut when San Francisco takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.
