The San Francisco 49ers acquired edge rusher Chase Young in a blockbuster trade deadline deal with the Washington Commanders, sending a third-round draft pick to the Commanders in return.
The 49ers knew full well that Young was set to be a free agent this offseason when they acquired him, and it seems like they will cross that bridge when they get there.
Young was asked about his contract status in his introductory press conference this week, and the youngster said he isn’t thinking about it.
“I’m not even worried about that right now,” Young said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “I’m just worried about learning this playbook and just being the best player that I can be.”
Young, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by Washington with the second overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He had a very impressive rookie campaign, registering 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
However, the following year, Young tore his ACL nine games into the season, and in 2022, he was limited to just three contests due to his recovery and other issues. Over those two years, Young compiled just 1.5 sacks.
The Commanders declined to exercise his fifth-year option going into 2023, and Young ended up missing the season opener due to a stinger he sustained in preseason. The 24-year-old returned in Week 2 and has actually had somewhat of a resurgence this year, as he has logged 15 tackles and five sacks through seven games.
Young should be of considerable assistance to a San Francisco pass rush that has actually struggled to get to the quarterback this season. The Niners have totaled just 18 sacks thus far.
Chase Young will make his 49ers debut when they battle the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.
