San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was initially listed as questionable for his team’s Monday night matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, but not only did he play, he broke an NFL record.
According to Brad Beltz of RotoBaller, McCaffrey set a league record for most consecutive games with a touchdown (including playoffs) at 16 games in the 49ers’ 22-17 loss to the Vikings.
McCaffrey wasn’t incredibly efficient as a rusher on the evening, carrying the ball 15 times for 45 yards and that touchdown. He also added three catches for 51 yards.
The 27-year-old leads the NFL with 598 rushing yards after seven weeks. He has also scored eight touchdowns on the ground while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. In addition, he has caught 26 passes for 228 yards and three scores.
McCaffrey, who played his collegiate football at Stanford, was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers with the eighth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He had a relatively quiet rookie campaign, but in his second season, McCaffrey broke out, posting 1,098 yards and seven scorers on the ground while snaring 107 balls for 867 yards and six touchdowns. Then, the following year, McCaffrey enjoyed his best season to date, racking up 1,387 yards and 15 scores as rusher while also hauling in 116 receptions for 1,005 yards and four touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl and earned a First-Team All-Pro selection that season.
Injuries then limited McCaffrey to just 10 games in 2020 and 2021, and midway through last season, the Panthers traded the superstar halfback to the 49ers.
Across 17 contests in both Carolina and San Francisco in 2022, McCaffrey recorded 1,139 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He added 85 grabs for 741 yards while reaching the end zone five times through the air.
The Niners are 5-2 and will battle the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.
