Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton recently called San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (among numerous other signal-callers) a game manager.
Well, on Christmas Day, Purdy threw four interceptions in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens, with three of them coming in the first half.
Feeling somewhat vindicated, Newton took to X to take a subtle (but yet no so subtle) jab at Purdy.
Newton’s reaction did not sit well with 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who made his feelings about Newton known on the Up & Adams Show this week.
“First of all Cam Newton, stop texting my phone bro, you were a fan like two weeks ago,” Samuel said (via JPA Football). “You wanted me on your podcast after talking about my quarterback.”
Purdy went 18-for-32 with 255 yards in what ended up being a 33-19 loss.
The horrific performance from Purdy put a serious dent in his MVP candidacy, as he entered Week 16 considered the frontrunner to win the award.
However, he has now fallen behind Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in the eyes of many, and probably appropriately, as Jackson has led Baltimore to the league’s best record and is having a magnificent campaign.
On the season overall, Purdy has thrown for 4,050 yards, 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 68.8 percent of his passes and posting an NFL-best passer rating of 112.2.
Meanwhile, Samuel has caught 53 passes for 834 yards and six touchdowns.
Samuel, who played his collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, was selected by the Niners in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
He logged 57 catches for 802 yards and three scores during an impressive rookie showing before injuries limited him to just seven games in 2020. But in 2021, Samuel broke out, hauling in 77 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection.
The 49ers are 11-4 and will take on the Washington Commanders this Sunday.
