The Seattle Seahawks blew away all expectations that were placed on the team during the 2022 season. They went 9-8, earning a Wild Card spot in the playoffs. A big reason for Seattle’s success last season was the performance of their offense.
A resurgent performance by Geno Smith, who was starting for the first time since 2014 with the New York Jets, spearheaded the excellent performance. Smith made the most of his opportunity, signing a three-year, $75 million deal with $40 million in guarantees.
The weapons around Smith are quite impressive. At wide receiver, he has D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett to get the ball to. In the backfield, Kenneth Walker III has emerged as the starter, taking over when Rashaad Penny suffered a season-ending injury last season.
That is an impressive trio to work with, but it wouldn’t hurt to add a little more talent to the mix. After Metcalf and Lockett, Marquise Goodwin was the next most productive wide receiver. The elite speedster caught 27 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. However, with Goodwin now a free agent, there is a need for the team offensively.
The Seahawks could turn to the 2023 NFL Draft to fill the void. One player who could pique their interest is Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, as Seattle was named the best fit for him in the draft.
Hyatt is an elite vertical option and would fit seamlessly into the role that Goodwin had in 2022. Adding someone with his skill set would open things up greatly for the Seahawks with his speed and big play ability.
Possessing 4.40 speed, Hyatt would find a lot of success working either from the slot or on the perimeter. Teams were able to sometimes stymie the Seahawks’ offense last season, especially when Lockett or Metcalf wasn’t on the field, giving more attention to stopping the run.
Having a player such as Hyatt that can easily take the top off the defense will open more running lanes for Walker. Opponents will have to commit another player deep down the field, which is one less player stacking the box against the run.
Last season, Hyatt averaged 18.9 yards per reception, finishing the season with 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns. With Lockett entering his age-31 season, adding a potential long-term option at wide receiver would make sense.
Thanks to the trade last season with the Denver Broncos, the Seahawks will be picking No. 37 overall, which is a top-six pick in the second round. That would be the perfect spot to land Hyatt as long as a run on wide receivers doesn’t occur in the first round and he is off the board.
