Seahawks Linked To Patriots’ Tight End As Trade Target

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks were one of the NFL’s feel-good stories. After trading franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, they were expected to rebuild and go through a lost season, but instead, new starting QB Geno Smith had a magnificent season, leading them to a 9-8 record and a playoff spot.

So far this season, while Smith hasn’t quite duplicated his production from 2022, he has been, for the most part, playing reasonably well, as have the Seahawks as a whole. They hold a 5-2 record, and it looks like they’re playoff-bound once again.

But with a few other NFC teams doing unexpectedly well, including the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks would benefit from some sort of trade before Tuesday’s deadline in order to bolster their chances of making it to the postseason. While Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf are a decent wide receiver duo, they could use one more playmaker on offense.

Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated suggests Seattle go after veteran tight end Hunter Henry of the New England Patriots.

“Henry, a pending free agent, would help Smith in the intermediate game to move the chains on third downs,” wrote Manzano. “The tight end has 20 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns this season.”

Henry was a second-round draft pick by the then-San Diego Chargers in 2016, and as a rookie, he put up 478 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. In 96 career games, he has a total of 3,644 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns.

Seattle’s tight ends haven’t really gotten the job done this year. Noah Fant, who was acquired in the Wilson trade in 2022, has 14 catches for 226 yards this season, but he hasn’t scored a single touchdown. Perhaps going out and acquiring Hunter Henry from the Patriots would give the Seahawks another viable option in certain offensive situations, especially given his 6-foot-5, nearly 260-pound frame.

The danger here is that given Henry is in the final year of his contract, he could turn out to be a rental. He is about to turn 29 in several weeks, but if he were to work out, perhaps he could be a part of their core for a few more years.
