Should the Redskins trade out of the No. 2 spot in NFL Draft?

Smokescreen season is in full effect, as the NFL Draft is just a few days away. Rumors have continued to dominate social media as fans await the start of draft night.

One rumor that’s starting to pick up some momentum, is that the Washington Redskins are receiving calls about their No. 2 overall selection.

The most plausible reason teams are contacting Washington for a potential trade-up, is to get their hands on a quarterback. Most scouts have Tua Tagovailoa as the consensus second-best quarterback entering this year’s draft behind Joe Burrow, and there have been plenty of teams rumored to have interest in the Alabama product.

But, with some of the long-term injury concerns surrounding Tua, some teams have reportedly placed Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert over Tua on their boards. While a trade-up for Herbert feels far fetched, crazier things have happened before.

The Chicago Bears traded up all the way to the No. 2 overall selection in 2017 to snag quarterback Mitchell Trubisky over Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. If someone falls in love with Herbert, seeing them trade up all the way to No. 2 is certainly in the cards.

Nevertheless, What does Washington gain from trading back? For starters, they’ll receive a lot of draft capital, which should be appealing to them considering they’re in the midst of a rebuild. They’ll still likely have a top 10 pick in this year’s draft, because most of the quarterback needy teams are placed in the top 10 or right outside of it.

They would be giving up the chance to draft Chase Young, who most scouts believe is the best overall prospect entering the draft. But, the abundance of draft picks they’d receive for trading back could make up for it.

Getting a plethora of picks in a draft that’s loaded with talent should trump potentially drafting an All Pro player; they could get a few All Pro or Pro Bowl level players if they accumulate more picks.

We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out once draft night rolls around on Thursday.
