The Arizona Cardinals don’t appear to be going anywhere this season.
Off to an 0-2 start, the Cardinals once again look like they will be missing the playoffs, and with Kyler Murray’s future in Arizona up the air, a total rebuild could be looming.
For that reason, it’s hard to imagine the Cardinals will keep tight end Zach Ertz around much longer.
Ertz has another year left on his deal after this season, so it’s not like Arizona is going to simply lose him in the offseason if it elects to keep him on the roster through 2023.
However, the Cards are clearly not contending for much of anything, so it would be wise for the club to place Ertz on the trade block and try and recoup some value for him ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
Could the Miami Dolphins jump into the mix and try to snare the veteran?
While the Dolphins are loaded at the wide receiver position with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, they could use some help at tight end. Currently, Durham Smythe is the team’s starter, and while he is serviceable, he is not going to move the needle.
Miami could offer Arizona a 2024 third-round draft pick for Ertz, shoring up its tight end spot and providing the Cardinals with a solid pick to use in their potential rebuild.
Ertz may no longer be the elite Pro Bowler he was during his heyday with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he remains a very reliable pass-catcher. Case in point, he has already logged 12 catches in the first two games of the season.
The 32-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Stanford, was originally selected by the Eagles in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
Zach Ertz spent parts of eight seasons in Philadelphia before being traded to Arizona in 2021.
