Top 5 NFL Free Agents Still Available After Day 2

The second day of NFL free agency is coming to a close, and while many names have flown off the board, there are still some key players still looking for a home.

There could be a plethora of reasons why certain guys are still unsigned, but chances are, most of these players I am about to name will be inking new contracts relatively soon.

So, without further ado, here are the top five NFL free agents who are still available after Day 2.

5. Kamren Curl, S

Safety is not one of the most renowned positions in the NFL, particularly with the rise of the importance of edge rushers and cornerbacks.

However, a safety is still an integral piece of a good defensive backfield, and Kamren Curl was one of the better ones available going into free agency.

But, he is still out there.

Curl is coming off of an impressive 2023 campaign with the Washington Commanders in which he racked up 115 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Also, he is still just 25 years old, so there is room for him to grow.

It’s possible Curl is asking for a fortune (for a safety), which is why he is still floating around. Chances are, he won’t be back with the Commanders, but we haven’t heard much about interest from other clubs.

4. Marquise Brown, WR

We’ve seen some wide receivers land surprising deals in free agency thus far. For example, Darnell Mooney received a three-year, $39 million deal from the Atlanta Falcons in spite of failing to crack 500 receiving yards each of the last two seasons.

So Marquise Brown is probably wondering why his named has not yet been called.

Well, it could be because Brown is seeing guys like Mooney and Gabe Davis land lucrative multi-year contracts and is thinking he should be getting compensated equally—if not more.

And you know what? He may have a point.

Yes, Brown struggled in his last year with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, but he had some injuries, and the Cardinals had Josh Dobbs under center for a good chunk of the season.

This is a guy with great speed who has a 1,000-yard campaign under his belt. He should land a long-term deal somewhere, and he could end up being one of the steals of this free-agent class.

3. Tyron Smith, OT

When he is healthy, Tyron Smith is one of the best offensive linemen in football. But that’s just the thing: he is rarely healthy.

Smith has not played a full season since 2015, and he has appeared in a grand total of 30 games over the last four years combined.

However, this past season, Smith was able to play in 13 games, and he was good enough to earn a Second-Team All-Pro selection. So, clearly, the 33-year-old still has something left in the tank.

Perhaps Smith is looking for a multi-year contract, which is why he is still without a home. More than likely, he will have to settle for a one-year deal, as it’s hard to imagine a team giving him multiple years given his checkered injury history.

Of course, a front office could always lace a multi-year deal with incentives for him.

We’ll see what becomes of Smith in the coming days (or weeks, depending on how long this drags out).

2. Chase Young, EDGE

Chase Young is one of the most intriguing players of this free-agent class.

He has the talent to be an elite pass rusher, but due to injuries and underwhelming performance in general, Young has never managed to log more than 7.5 sacks in a season.

This past year, Young totaled 7.5 sacks between the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers, and his progression tailed off once he was traded to the 49ers (he posted 2.5 sacks in nine games there).

There may absolutely be a gap between what Young feels he is worth and what teams are actually willing to pay him. Many clubs do not hand out contracts based on potential. It’s a results-based business, after all, and Young’s actual production on paper has been middling, to say the least.

But, Young is a former No. 2 overall pick for a reason. He is an athletic freak who absolutely has the ability to become a top-flight pass rusher in this league.

He is scheduled to have meetings with the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans this week, so we will see what happens.

1. Calvin Ridley, WR

That brings us to the best wide out on the open market.

With Mike Evans re-signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tee Higgins being franchise tagged by the Cincinnati Bengals, Calvin Ridley is clearly the top option at receiver.

There is certainly some risk involved with Ridley, but when he is on the field, there is no doubting his ability.

This past season, he hauled in 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and back in 2020, he racked up 90 catches for 1,374 yards and nine scores with the Atlanta Falcons.

Ridley is absolutely a No. 1-quality wide receiver, so the fact that he hasn’t drawn more interest—at least not publicly—is puzzling. Maybe he is asking for a ton of money? But seeing how much some of these other inferior wide outs have gotten paid, who could blame him?

Apparently, the 29-year-old wants to return to the Jaguars, but given that they just handed Gabe Davis a three-year, $39 million deal, they may not be able to afford him.

The New England Patriots have also expressed interest in Ridley, but we are just waiting for a darkhorse team to throw its hat into the ring.
