Commanders Could Poach Bargain DE From Division Rival

The Washington Commanders are in desperate need of a pass rusher after trading both Chase Young and Montez Sweat at the trade deadline back in October.

The good news is that the Commanders have the most cap space in the NFL heading into free agency, so they should be able to address the issue.

But if Washington wants to go the cheaper route, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport sees a potential bargain for the club on the open market: Dallas Cowboys defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr.

The chances of the Cowboys re-signing Armstrong seem relatively slim, as they have other roster needs and are already over the salary cap as is.

So, retaining Armstrong is probably not something Dallas will end up doing in the coming weeks.

That should open the door for the NFC East division rival Commanders to swoop in and steal Armstrong away from the Cowboys in order to bolster their pass rush while hurting Dallas’.

Armstrong is coming off of an impressive 2023 campaign in which he played 17 games and registered 38 tackles and 7.5 sacks.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Kansas, was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

After three mostly unproductive seasons to begin his career, Armstrong began to show signs of breaking through in 2021 when he recorded 37 tackles, five sacks, a fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown.

He then showed some more improvement in 2022, racking up 33 tackles, 8.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a couple of fumble recoveries.

The Houston native has not missed a game since 2021.

Now, the question is whether or not Armstrong would thrive in a defense that does not also house Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.
