The Washington Commanders own the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft and are expected to take either North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels at that pick (assuming USC’s Caleb Williams goes No. 1 to the Chicago Bears).
But what if the Commanders throw us a curveball and decide to trade for a quarterback instead?
That is exactly what Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire is suggesting that they do.
In a blockbuster trade proposal, Farrar has Washington swinging a deal with the Bears to acquire Justin Fields. He then says that the Commanders could take LSU receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 2 pick, providing Fields with an instant weapon.
Farrar doesn’t go into specifics as far as what Chicago would receive in return from Washington for Fields, but it is certainly an interesting proposition, nonetheless.
Fields is widely expected to be traded this offseason, as the general consensus is that the Bears will be taking Williams with the top overall selection.
The 25-year-old is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he started 13 games and threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. In addition, he rushed for 657 yards and four scores.
Fields missed four contests due to a dislocated thumb he suffered in Week 6.
The Ohio State product was selected by Chicago with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but his inconsistency has prevented him from solidifying his position as the team’s franchise quarterback.
While Fields certainly showed some flashes this past season, he has gone just 10-28 as a starter since being drafted, and he has not had enough of a prolonged stretch of impressive play in order to warrant the Bears committing to him going forward.
Perhaps the Commanders can get the most out of Justin Fields in 2024 and beyond (although they haven’t exactly had a great history with quarterbacks, either).
