The new regime for the Washington Commanders is officially in place. After hiring Adam Peters on January 12th to take over as the new general manager, the head coaching vacancy has now been filled.

Dan Quinn, who had been the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys for the last three seasons, will be taking over as head coach. He will replace Ron Rivera, who was fired after four seasons on the job.

Quinn had been considered a front-runner for the head coaching job with the Seattle Seahawks, but they went in a different direction. They did end up going with a person who has a defensive background, hiring Mike Macdonald away from the Baltimore Ravens.

Peters and Quinn will be tasked with turning around a Commanders franchise that didn’t have much success under owner Dan Synder but is looking to turn things around under Josh Harris. Harris leads a new ownership group hoping to help return the franchise to prominence.

NFL News & Rumors: Dan Quinn & Washington Commanders Updates

Hiring Quinn as head coach is a good step toward accomplishing that. Quinn is a well-liked person around the NFL and has found success as a head coach previously. He was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons, as he was fired after Week 5 in his final campaign with the franchise.

During his time in Atlanta, Quinn went 43-42 in the regular season. The Falcons made the postseason twice under his watch, including a run to the Super Bowl in the 2016 season. But, they lost to the New England Patriots, infamously blowing a 28-3 lead.

But, before Quinn arrived in Atlanta, they had won only 10 games in the previous two seasons combined. He helped turn things around instantly, as they went 8-8 in his first season at the helm before becoming NFC Champions in Year 2.

That kind of quick success is something the Commanders certainly hope he can replicate. Washington owns the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and could land their new franchise quarterback of the future. That is an incredible asset to have for a new general manager and head coach to kick off their regime with.
