Why Jordan Love Was The Perfect Pick For The Packers
Let’s be honest, the Packers have been needing a long-term quarterback option behind Rodgers for a year or two. Tim Boyle is not the guy that would step in and help lead the franchise forward in the event of another injury to Rodgers.
Over the last few years, the Packers have seen Rodgers struggle with a knee injury and break a collarbone. They are one play again from having to turn to their backup quarterback. Love can step in and play if that ever happened.
Back when the Packers selected Rodgers, they knew Brett Favre was aging and would be leaving town via retirement or a trade in the fairly near future. The same can be said for Rodgers.
While he has not shown the kind of regression that the media has accused him of, he is still getting older. At this point in time, he is 36 years old and isn’t getting any younger. Love will have a couple years to learn behind Rodgers and improve to be ready for taking over the starting job.
Bringing in a young quarterback to learn from Rodgers make this a perfect move for the Packers. Love has the talent to be a very special quarterback in the future. However, the opportunity to learn from one of the best of all-time will take his development to another level.
As for the here and now, the Packers feel like they have enough talent on offense to get by. They didn’t think they needed a first-round rookie wideout.
Davante Adams is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Behind him, the Packers have a lot of young talent in Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown. All three of those guys are capable of taking a big step forward and performing at a much higher level.
Taking Jordan Love in the first round will pay off in a big way for the Packers in the future. He may not make the same kind of transition as the Packers had from Favre to Rodgers, but he will help keep them in contention even when Rodgers is gone.
