The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could have some big holes to fill this offseason. However, none will be bigger than the hole that they will have at the quarterback position. Tom Brady has officially announced his retirement, which means the Buccaneers are going to need a new player under center in 2022.
The only quarterback currently on the Buccaneers roster is their 2021 second-round pick, Kyle Trask. Given the fact that the team liked him enough to select him in the second round, it likely means he will eventually have a shot at the starting job.
He could very well get his shot this year, but the Buccaneers still need to add some more depth to the position. Given their salary cap restraints and the number of free agents they will look to retain, their options could be limited.
One player that could make sense for Tampa Bay is Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater is predicted to land with the Buccaneers in a recent piece put together at Bleacher Report predicting the quarterback carousel this offseason.
Bringing in a veteran such as Bridgewater makes a lot of sense. He can provide some experience to help bring Trask along until he is ready to start. If that time doesn’t come, Tampa Bay would be comfortable knowing they can at least start Bridgewater for the foreseeable future.
While Bridgewater hasn’t lit things up with explosive aerial displays, he is a more than serviceable player. He has 63 starts under his belt with a winning record, going 33-30. Before landing Brady two years ago, there were reports that the Buccaneers were optimistic they could land Bridgewater. So, why not kick the tires on that pursuit again in 2022?
The passing game won’t be as potent with Bridgewater under center, but you know what you are going to get with him under center. He is an efficient passer that offers some juice with his legs in the run game as well.
Given the Buccaneer’s limited resources, landing an established player such as Bridgewater should be considered a win. He would help them remain competitive in an NFC South division that is wide open with each team being in varying stages of a retooling.
