Why The Eagles Should Target CeeDee Lamb
Lamb had a fantastic 2019 season for the Sooners, with 62 catches for 1,327 yards (sixth in the country) and a Big 12-leading 14 touchdowns (tied for fifth in the country) as he averaged 21.4 yards per catch (third in the country). As a sophomore in 2018 he had 65 receptions for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns, so he was not a flash in the pan.
Lamb is not big in the sense we usually think of it. But at 6-foot-2 and 189 pounds, he’s hardly small. He also “only” ran the 40 in 4.5 seconds at the Combine, so in terms of timed speed he’s not elite and he came in nearly a quarter-second shy of Henry Ruggs’ top time (4.27 seconds).
But Lamb showed plenty of chops on the field Thursday night, including making this fantastic catch (note two feet down) in the Red Zone Fade drill.
Lamb has a chance to be taken in the top-10 overall, maybe No. 8 to the Arizona Cardinals if Cardinals’ quarterback Kyle Murray (and Lamb’s college teammate) has his way. That’s a little aggressive to me, but Lamb should go in the top half of the first round or so as one of the first three or four wide receivers taken.
Depending on how things go with wide receivers in the first 10-12 picks, the Eagles could just stand pat at No. 21 and take the best player available regardless of position or need.
Eagles’ general manager Howie Roseman has shown a level of aggressiveness when the opportunities are there though, and the opportunity to move up in the draft for a top wide receiver will be right in front of him. In his recent mock draft, Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports had the Eagles trading up with the New York Jets at No. 11 to take Lamb.
