On paper, the Denver Broncos have one of the deepest, most talented wide receiver groups in the NFL. Unfortunately for them, the game isn’t played on paper. On the field, it has been a different story for the team.
The Broncos have struggled to keep their wide receiver group healthy enough to stay on the field at the same time. Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, KJ Hamler and Tim Patrick have all missed time throughout their careers, rarely stepping on the field together.
That has led to the team having to mix and match some lineups. But, if they can get on the field together, expectations are high amongst the players on the team. Jeudy recently spoke about how exciting it would be to all get on the field at the same time again.
“Having everybody on the field at the same time, it’s going to be big, because I know what we’re capable of, and they know what we’re capable of,” Jeudy said, per Ben Swanson of the team’s official website. “So having everybody on the same field is going to be a hard group of guys to stop.”
If they can all get on the field at the same time is another question. This group has been mentioned in plenty of trade rumors throughout the offseason and they only got louder once even more depth was added to the team.
Marquez Callaway, who had begun his career with the New Orleans Saints under Sean Payton, signed in Denver in free agency. In the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Broncos selected Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.
With some added competition, eyes have turned to Hamler. He was recently mentioned by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report as a possible veteran who could find themselves on the roster bubble heading into training camp at the end of the month.
Hamler has immense potential that led to him being a second-round pick for Denver in 2020. But, he has been unable to stay on the field, appearing in only 23 games in three seasons. There is only so long that a team can hold onto a player for their potential before it is time to cut the cord.
Hamler did agree to a reworked contract with the team, which would seemingly improve his chances of sticking around. But, if he cannot get on the field for training camp, as he recovers from a torn pectoral, it could be time for the Broncos to cut him loose and give the roster spot to someone else.
