Giants: 3 worst-case scenarios for New York in 2020

2. Pat Shurmur 2.0

Tom Coughlin patrolled the sidelines for 12 years in New York. He made the playoffs five times and brought the team two Super Bowl titles. Since then, the franchise has not been able to find a competent head coach.

Ben McAdoo was given the job after Coughlin and brought the Giants to the playoffs after an 11-5 campaign. After the regular season, it all went downhill. The Giants lost in Green Bay 38-13 in the Wild Card round, McAdoo started 2-10 the very next year, and made the decision to bench Eli Manning and break his consecutive starts streak. He was let go before Week 13.

As bad as McAdoo was, he looked like Vince Lombardi compared to Pat Shurmur. This was a head coach who was not prepared to come to New York and handle the pressure. That was clear by his handling of the media and his blank stare on the sidelines while going 9-23 in two seasons.

Enter Joe Judge. All we know about the Giants’ new coach is that he spent eight years as an assistant in New England and he can hold a solid press conference. For some, that is enough. It is unknown how he will handle the bright lights of New York but for the Giants’ sake, he needs to stick around.
