Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been the subject of criticism this season, and the fact that his team just just 4-6 thus far has not exactly helped his case.
To make matters worse, Herbert is the only signal-caller to tally 30 losses on his resume since the start of the 2020 campaign (h/t NFL on CBS).
Most recently, Herbert went 21-for-36 with 260 yards and a couple of touchdowns in the Chargers’ loss to the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday.
It’s certainly hard to pin all of the blame for Los Angeles’ struggles on Herbert. After all, he has thrown for 2,609 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 66.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.5 thus far in 2023.
Those are very good numbers, and most teams would do anything to have a quarterback who could put forth that type of production.
However, the wins simply are not stacking up for Herbert.
Since entering the NFL as the sixth overall pick back in 2020, Herbert has gone just 29-30 as a starter, and the Bolts have made just one trip to the playoffs. That postseason appearance came last year, when the Chargers blew a 27-0 lead in their Wild Card Round loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Herbert’s stats have always been more than solid. Back in 2021, for example, he totaled 5,014 yards, 38 touchdowns and 15 picks while completing 65.9 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 97.7. That led to a Pro Bowl appearance.
Last year, Herbert threw for 4,739 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 picks, completing 68.2 percent of his passes and recording a passer rating of 93.2.
Still, in spite of the impressive numbers, something appears to be missing in Herbert’s game over the first four seasons of his NFL career.
The Chargers will take on the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday.
