The Pittsburgh Steelers steamrolled through their preseason competition this year. They went 3-0, winning all of the games in impressive fashion. While the outcomes and statistics don’t count for anything in the long term, the Steelers have to feel good about the momentum they are creating heading into the regular season.
There were positives in all facets of the game for Pittsburgh, who are going to prove a lot of doubters wrong during the regular season. But, like every team in the NFL, some major moves are coming with roster cutdown day being yesterday.
The Steelers had to say goodbye to some players who had been with the organization for months, as the roster had as many as 90 players on it during the offseason. Waiver claims will lead to more roster moves being made as well, as the coaching staff and front office will keep an eye on players who shake loose across the league.
If there was a trade that the team would look to make ahead of the season, adding some more depth to the secondary wouldn’t be the worst idea. In the opinion of Alex Sabri of ClutchPoints, Amik Robertson of the Las Vegas Raiders would be an ideal trade target.
Robinson was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech. He had a productive 2022 campaign with two interceptions and nine passes defended, setting career highs across the board. He played in all 17 games as well, the first time that he was healthy for an entire campaign.
This offseason the Steelers revamped their secondary with a flurry of moves. After Cam Sutton departed and signed with the Detroit Lions, Patrick Peterson and Chandon Sullivan were both signed away from the Minnesota Vikings. Their second-round pick was used on Joey Porter Jr. out of Penn State as well.
Right now, Peterson and Levi Wallace are penciled in as the starters with Sullivan as the slot corner. Adding a player like Robertson would help strengthen the team’s depth as he is versatile enough to play both the inside and outside cornerback positions.
