Sam Howell, despite his seemingly imminent departure as the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders, remains a valuable asset for potential trade.

Identified as a potential fit for two AFC teams, namely the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, Howell’s availability sparks interest among football pundits.

Connor Hughes of SNY.tv advocates for Howell’s potential transfer to the Jets, citing numerous factors that align with the team’s needs.

“I love the idea of this, assuming he’s available. The Commanders could easily keep him as the backup. It’s not like this is a Sam Darnold, Justin Fields situation. If available, though, I’d prioritize him over anyone else.”

Similarly, Justin Melo from The Draft Network sees Howell as a viable contender for the Steelers, providing stiff competition for current starter Kenny Pickett.

“Howell’s competitive attitude makes him an ideal candidate to push Pickett in training camp.”

While trading Howell poses risks for the Commanders, especially considering the impending free agency of veteran backup Jacoby Brissett, the move could yield valuable draft compensation. Such a decision would offer new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn additional resources to overhaul the team’s roster.

Moreover, parting ways with Howell would facilitate a clear transition at the quarterback position, paving the way for the incoming potential franchise quarterback expected to be selected second overall in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.

Undoubtedly, the offseason ahead promises to be intriguing for the Washington Commanders, as they navigate through crucial decisions, beginning with their quarterback situation. Sam Howell could be on his way out of town.
